Jovial Rantao was born in Naledi Soweto in 1964. He is currently married with two children and enjoys reading for relaxation.

Career information

Jovial Rantao is the editor of The Sunday Independent, and deputy editor of The Star. At The Star he held numerous positions including executive editor, news editor, political editor and political correspondent. In 2007 he was elected the Chairman of the South African National Editors' Forum, replacing Ferial Haffajee and he was re-elected in 2008. Rantao also co-authored the book Life and Times of Thabo Mbeki, published in 1999. Rantao received his BA in journalism with honours from the University of Witwatersrand.
